Hi! I am a professional counselor licensed in the state of Michigan and certified in Michigan as a supervisor of limited licensed counselors working toward full licensure. I have worked in the human services field for 25 years and specifically as a therapist for the last 19 after procuring a Master of Sciences degree in Counseling from National Louis University in 2001. I have had the honor to work with clients in non profits, Community Mental Health, Vanderbilt University Psychiatric and private practice. I have significant training and experience providing therapy for folks with family relational problems, depression, trauma(including adults with history of or present experience with sexual/ physical abuse or neglect, and domestic violence), ADHD, addictions and OCD. I have also worked with psychosis counseling and diagnosis/ referral to psychiatric assessment. I believe in the importance of warmth, unconditional positive regard and developing a therapeutic bond based in trust and respect for counseling to be most effective. I utilize an eclectic approach based on an individuals needs and goals utilizing such therapies as Solution Focused, Cognitive Behavioral, Existential Based, Family Systems and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Please know you are doing the right thing and research reveals that simply taking actions to address our problems can lead to significant benefit in the process of healing. It is encouraging to know this is the case each time one takes this first step and I look forward to helping guide you through "your' healing process.

California, California - Psychologist

It is by suffering that human beings become angels. – Victor Hugo Hello, my name is James Chavers. Thank you for taking the time to read my counselor profile. I am a clinical psychologist licensed and living in California. I earned my masters and doctorate in clinical psychology at Antioch University Santa Barbara. I have worked and trained in locked settings (jails and prisons), community health clinics, and colleges and universities for 9 years. I have worked with older adults living with HIV, addiction, and life course diseases, inmates of all genders preparing to transition out of locked settings, and students from 18-50+ navigating the difficulties of college life. Collaborating with my patients, we have worked through relationship, substance abuse, family, gender, sexuality, sexual assault, mood, and trauma issues, to name a few. My clients and I have worked together using a variety of modalities including Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Motivational Interviewing, and Client-centered Therapy. Incorporating Humanistic philosophies in my work, I believe that every person is deserving of love and respect. Each person is the expert of their own life. My purpose as a therapist is to support, suggest, and succor as needed. Finding the right counselor is akin to meeting a great friend. You want someone in your life who accepts you unconditionally, but is not afraid to call you out when you do something stupid. This friend takes the time to listen carefully to what’s going on, and then if you like, shares some insight. This friend is solidly in your corner and makes you feel like you are the most important person in the room. This friend stands by you and walks by your side as you work through your challenges. I have been blessed to have people like that in my life. If you give me the privilege, I would like to pay those experiences forward…to you. James Chavers PSY32025 Pronouns: He, him, his

California, California - Marriage And Family Therapist
Online
In Person

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in California with over 5 years of counseling experience. I practice in the Greater Los Angeles area and have worked with a wide range of clients on concerns regarding depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and life transitions. My therapeutic approach is a blend between Psychodynamic Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Psychodynamic Therapy tends to focus on the client’s self-awareness and how a client’s understanding of their past behavior or experiences influences them in present time. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) tends to focus on changing patterns of thinking or behavior through practical evidenced based practices. In my practice as a professional counselor and having worked with adolescents (13-17) and transitional aged youth (18-24) for many years, I have found ways to utilize creative and expressive arts as an intervention to connect and assist clients in learning more about themselves. My counseling style is warm and interactive. I will tailor our dialogue and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I believe everyone has a story and every story is equally important and valuable. It takes courage to seek a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards a change. If you are ready to take that step, I am here to support and empower you. I look forward to working with you!
