Mental Health in Idaho
Idaho is facing a crisis when it comes to mental health. The problem isn’t that Idahoians have higher rates of mental illness. In fact, about 20% of people in the US have a mental health condition while the rate in Idaho is similar at 22% according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
And yet, according to an analysis of the CDC’s cause of death data, suicide rates in Idaho are significantly higher than the US average – the rate is about 20 in 100,000 in Idaho compared to 14 per 100,000 in the US.
So why is there such a difference between the rates of mental health illnesses and fatalities? The problem is access.
Idaho has a shortage of mental health care providers. According to NAMI, nearly 1.3 million Idahoians don’t have enough mental health providers in their area. Affordability is a factor too. Nearly half of the Idahoians who don’t get the treatment they need say that the problem was the cost.
