Mental Health in North Dakota

Data from the North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) shows that 30.9% of middle school students report feeling sad or hopeless for at least two consecutive weeks each month. In addition, 35% of high school students share this experience and nearly 60% of college students have attended counseling for a mental health condition in the past year.

Unfortunately, Kids Count North Dakota shares that nearly half (46%) of children and youth with a mental health disorder are not currently receiveing the treatment they need and 10,000 do not have health insurance.

Agencies across the state have pooled their resources to improve resident access to treatment providers in all regions. In addition to crisis lifelines, they’re also staffing mobile crisis teams and specialized CARES Crisis Response Teams for people with developmental disabilities. The HHS has also set up short-term services in key counties including Fargo and Bismarck, which include short-term residential services and walk-in outpatient support.
