Mental Health in New Hampshire
Compared to most states New Hampshire has a lower prevalence of mental illness and higher rates of access to care. Mental Health America ranks the state in the top ten, at number eight. However there are still areas where The Granite State struggles.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that 17% of adults in New Hampshire who experience anxiety or depression can’t get the counseling they need, and more than half of New Hampshire youth who have depression don’t receive any care for this condition.
Still, the state offers growing resources for those in need of mental health support. In recent years the mental health workforce in New Hampshire has grown, increasing 50% since 2012. The state’s Department of Health and Human Services also offers Community Menal Health Centers that offer mental health services throughout the state, to provide New Hampshire residents the support they need.
