Mental Health in Nebraska

If you’re living in the Cornhusker State, you’ll find many of your friends and neighbors spending their days on beautiful farmland or enjoying all that Omaha has to offer. But beneath the surface, they may be fighting battles you aren’t aware of. Over 250,000 adults in Nebraska are living with a mental illness, including 62,000 who have a serious mental illness. Teenagers suffer as well, as over 22,000 teens in Nebraska have depression.

What’s interesting is that Nebraska has significantly more psychiatrists available than most states in the US. While the US overall only has enough psychiatrists to meet 28% of the need for them, Nebraska has enough psychiatrists to meet 48% of the need. Still, 30% of adults and 60% of teenagers with a mental illness don’t get the care they need.

This can happen because of many different factors, from costs to stigma, but learning about the resources available for your mental health in your area is an excellent first step to making sure that you and your loved ones can get the care you need.
