The latest data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services shows that 57,832 people were seen across the state for a mental health condition in 2023. Of those, 30,040 sought crisis services while 11,661 attended outpatient counseling.

The mental health crisis here has reached new heights in recent years. In 2022, Wisconsin was ranked as the best state in the nation for mental health access and care. In only two years, its placement dropped to 13th in 2024.

The state is now investing critical resources in an effort to reverse this trend and reclaim its coveted top spot once again. The government is using $100 million in funds from the American Rescue Plan to improve access to care and resources.

This includes a $9.1 million investment in Wisconsin’s behavioral health workforce and $5 million to remove barriers to care by installing telehealth platforms at community places like libraries, food pantries, schools, and homeless shelters.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Wisconsin is an organization that provides advocacy, support and education for people that have been impacted by mental illness. They offer virtual presentations on a variety of topics related to mental illness and offer family and peer to peer support groups.
The University Health Services Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides free and confidential Survivor Services. This program is for students who have experienced sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation and/or stalking. They offer trauma informed group counseling, individual therapy and care management services.

The Mental Health Emergency Center in Milwaukee offers 24/7 emergency mental health services for adults, children and adolescents. Services include patient centered and culturally informed care such as assessments, stabilization and treatment.
Walkers Point Youth and Family Center provides free and confidential counseling and housing for runaway and homeless youth in Milwaukee. They can provide temporary shelter (up to 21 days) and crisis services, individual and family counseling and a longer term housing program called Insights Supportive Housing (up to 24 months).

They can provide support to those who are experiencing mental health challenges and substance use disorder. They do not provide professional advice or counseling.
Journey Mental Health Center in Madison provides evidence based culturally sensitive mental health care. This includes a crisis hotline, crisis stabilization, mental health and substance abuse disorder assessments, individual counseling, peer support and medication assisted treatment. Services are offered in English and Spanish. They accept commercial insurance, Medicaid and Medicare.
Farmwell Wisconsin is a program that provides support for farmers in Wisconsin. Their services include a 24/7 crisis hotline, health and wellness promotion programs, tele-counseling sessions and assistance with connecting to local resources including counseling vouchers that help farmers and their families obtain free in-person counseling.
