Mental Health in West Virginia

A recent report from West Virginia University shows that 24.6% of the general population suffers from some kind of mental health disorder. This is significantly higher than the national average of 19.86%. Moreover, KFF reports that 10.3% of children ages three to 17 seek treatment for mental healthcare each year.

A positive trend throughout the state is increased access to providers, as evidenced by the fact that 11.4% of children visited the Emergency Department (ED) for a mental health issue in the first half of 2023, compared to 8.3% in 2022.

The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) also notes that enrollments in residential treatment centers are down, attributed to higher enrollment numbers in home-based services and community care facilities.

The state’s Behavioral Health Initiative is focused on maintaining and expanding this access, especially in rural and underserved regions. It’s also incentivizing careers in the mental health field, expanding telehealth services, and connecting statewide agencies and stakeholders to create a network of accessible care.
