Mental Health in Utah

In 2023, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services reported that around 24% of state residents experienced at least seven days of poor mental health each month. This concern was most prevalent among lower-income individuals and older adults.

While the Beehive State has seen its share of challenges in this realm, the silver lining is that mental wellness among young people and teens seems to be improving. A 2023 CDC study showed that while 37% of teens still report feeling hopeless or sad for at least two consecutive weeks out of the year, that number is down from 2021, when 41.5% of this age group was struggling in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Several agencies, including the Utah Hospital Association (UHA) and the Utah Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have come together to form the Utah Behavioral Health Coalition. This group is working to fast-track physical and behavioral health initiatives, improve access to care, and increase the number of mental healthcare providers across the state.
