Mental Health in Minnesota

Mental health concerns are on the rise in Minnestoa. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the percentage of adults in the state living with a depressive disorder jumped from 15.1% in 2011 up to 23.5% in 2022.

Experts explain there are many reasons why this could be the case. While Wisconsin’s ultra-long and dark winters have long been associated with feelings of stress anxiety, other factors have come into play more recently. These include social justice concerns, economic instability, and the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those who seek inpatient care for mental health challenges are experiencing frustrations that could discourage them from reaching out in the future. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) found that 17% of people treated in these settings have to wait around eight days to complete their discharge procedures.

According to an MDH study, an increased emphasis on community support and a stronger post-inpatient infrastructure could help decrease these wait times. This is especially important in rural areas, where rates of suicide are 36% higher in Minnesota than in urban regions.
